Let me tell you a quick story...

The other night I was quietly reading my veterinary journal in the pet ER, when all of a sudden I heard “Triage stat to the parking lot with a gurney!”.

This announcement always makes my heart sink. It means that there is a dog that has arrived that can't walk and is too big to carry.

Two minutes later, our awesome vet techs come rushing into the treatment area with an 89 lb Rottweiler. This poor soul had just been hit by a car and had multiple lacerations and head trauma as well as a broken hind leg.

Later that morning, another dog that had been vomiting for two days came in. She was sooo adorable and sad.
She was dehydrated with pain in her belly. X-rays were taken which ultimately showed that she had a bowel obstruction.

During surgery, several pieces of dog bedding were removed from her stomach and small intestine. She was kept in the hospital for several days until she was eating and drinking again without trouble.

The owner reported that she had separation anxiety and would destroy her bedding when upset.

So Many Preventable Problems

This scenario plays out every night all over the country.
I'll be the first to say that treatment for your dog in the Veterinary Emergency Center is inconvenient (especially now!) and expensive.

As veterinarians, we hate to see preventable problems and would love to reduce the number of dogs we see with life-threatening emergencies.

A large percentage of the problems I see can be prevented through the right type of training and
UNDERSTANDING dog's natural instincts.

When you tap into a dog's natural instincts or their "hidden intelligence" they want to listen to you, they get joy out of performing for you and they are more emotionally balanced. These dogs are much less likely to get into trouble.

Training and behavior modification can really help reduce a lot of problems that people encounter every day. Problems such as aggression, separation anxiety, getting in dog fights or being hit by cars can be avoided with proper training.

It's All About The Motivation...

There are several keys to successful dog training. And all of these can be learned by anyone!

Not only will you get a better behaved dog, but the bond between you will grow even more.

The biggest key is that you have to have your dog’s full attention and trust. If you don’t achieve this, you will continue to struggle. Your dog won’t respect you as their leader and it will be difficult for you to change his or her behavior. If you don’t know how to do this, take lessons from a positive dog trainer.

If they don’t see you as their leader, they won’t listen to you in those crucial moments when you need them to stay out of trouble. If you want to have a dog that listens to you all the time, you have to win their mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. By tapping into their instincts, you can motivate any dog to modify their behavior. This can be accomplished using treats, praise and accomplishments.

The Solution

Since I am a veterinarian, lots of clients ask me about training and dog behavior. This is especially true when their dogs are having trouble with issues such as housemates fighting, barking excessively, chewing or destructive behaviors and concerns over aggression towards people, especially their children.

I usually offer the tips mentioned above but also strongly encourage them to seek out the advice of a well-respected trainer.

With today's social distancing environment, I am recommending more and more online resources so people can understand and train their own dogs. By taking the quiz, we can find out if you are a good candidate for the dog training that gets my top recommendation.

Believe me, I've looked at a lot of them!
